The rapid prototyping process is as follows:

l) The construction of a three-dimensional model of the product. Since the RP system is directly driven by the 3D CAD model, the 3D CAD model of the machined workpiece must first be built. The three-dimensional CAD model can be directly constructed using computer-aided design software (such as Pro/E, I-DEAS, Solid Works, UG, etc.), or the two-dimensional pattern of an existing product can be converted to form a three-dimensional model or a product entity. Laser scanning and CT tomography were performed to obtain point cloud data, and then a three-dimensional model was constructed using a reverse engineering method.

2) Approximate processing of 3D models. Since products often have irregular free surfaces, the model must be approximated before processing to facilitate subsequent data processing. Because the format of the STL format file is simple and practical, it has become a quasi-standard interface file in the field of rapid prototyping. It approximates the original model with a series of small triangular planes. Each small triangle is described by 3 vertex coordinates and a normal vector. The size of the triangle can be selected according to the accuracy requirement. The STL file has two output formats: binary code and ASCll code. The space occupied by the binary code output format is much smaller than that of the ASCII code output format, but the ASCII output format can be read and checked. Typical CAD software comes with the ability to convert and output STL format files.

3) Slice processing of a three-dimensional model. According to the characteristics of the processed model, a proper machining direction is selected, and the approximated model is cut with a series of planes at certain forming intervals in order to extract the outline information of the section. The interval generally takes 0.05mm~0.5mm, commonly used 0.1mm. The smaller the interval, the higher the molding accuracy, but the longer the molding time, the lower the efficiency. On the contrary, the accuracy is low, but the efficiency is high. Have a better understanding of concept rapid prototyping.


4) molding processing. According to the sectional profile of the slicing process, under the control of the computer, the corresponding forming head (laser head or nozzle) performs scanning movement according to the profile information of each section, accumulates materials layer by layer on the work table, and then binds the layers. Finally get the prototype product.

5) Post-processing of molded parts. Remove the molded parts from the molding system, polish, polish, coat, or post-sinter in a high-temperature furnace to further increase the strength. For all of this we know more about the concept of rapid prototyping.
